Mel was a three-sport letterman at Poly, competing in football, basketball and track. He was All-CBL in football and basketball and All-CIF for the 1948 Basketball CBL champs. At RCC, he was All-Eastern Conference.

    Mel was a three-sport letterman at Poly, competing in football, basketball and track. He was All-CBL in football and basketball and All-CIF for the 1948 Basketball CBL champs. At RCC, he was All-Eastern Conference. Mel chose Oregon for the study of Architecture and was the first African American to be an impact player there. In Seattle, he opened Streeter and Associates, designers of Safeco Field, Quest Stadium, and SeaTac Airport and was a Planning Commissioner. He is best known for his generous and supportive nature.
