Gary Lucas

Athlete, post-1970


Born in Riverside on November 8, 1954. He attended Poly High School from 1968-1972, where he lettered in baseball and basketball. He attended Riverside City College in 1972, but his baseball season was cut short due to a necessary surgery. He attended Chapman College from 1974-1976 and signed his first pro contract after being drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 19th round of the 1976 MLB Draft.

    Born in Riverside on November 8, 1954. He attended Poly High School from 1968-1972, where he lettered in baseball and basketball. He attended Riverside City College in 1972, but his baseball season was cut short due to a necessary surgery. He attended Chapman College from 1974-1976 and signed his first pro contract after being drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 19th round of the 1976 MLB Draft.

    After minor league stops in the Northwest League, the Texas League and the Pacific Coast League, he began his professional baseball career. Gary played 8 seasons in the Major Leagues with the San Diego Padres (1980-1983), Montreal Expos (1984-1985), California Angels (1986-1987) and finished his career with the Giants organization in AAA ball in Phoenix. He started his coaching career with the Giants in 1991 and also coached for Houston, the Minnesota Twins and in winter ball in Venezuela. His accomplishments include a 29-44 record with 63 saves (second most by a Riversider behind Troy Percival) and a 3.01 ERA in 669 innings.

    Lucas remains close with his Riverside friends and has fond memories of Evans Park, Shamel Park, Colt League and coaches like Dennis Rogers, Rich Ramirez and Ben Hammerschmidt.
