Coach Leathers had a 33-year coaching career as a high school track and field coach at Compton Centennial High School and North High School. After 3 CIF Divisional team titles at Centennial, Charles came to North in 1992, ushering in a run of success at the local and state level. North Track and Field won more CIF and State titles than any other school in the Inland Empire.
His Boy’s teams won CIF Divisional titles in 2006 and 2007. His Girl’s teams won CIF Championships in 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2007, as well as State Titles in 1999, 2000 and 2002. Charles has coached North individual athletes to the following titles: Joanna Hayes (100 hurdles and 300 hurdles, 1995); Nicole Hoxie (100 hurdles, 1996, 1997); Nichole Denby (100 hurdles, 1999, 2000); Ashley Brown (300 hurdles, 2001-2003, 100 hurdles 2003); North girls (1,600 relay, 2000); Chaunte Howard (high jump, 2002); Lena Bettis (long jump, 2002) and North boys (1,600 relay, 2006).
Olympic Gold Medalist Joanna Hayes has said, “Without him, I don’t think that I would have accomplished what I did in high school and beyond. I feel blessed he was my coach.”
