Bob was one of the most outstanding players from the “Golden Age of Softball in Riverside” in the 1950’s and 1960’s. At a height of 6’7″ and 265 lbs., Bob was a powerful slugger and a dominating pitcher. During his fastpitch career, he played for the Riverside Browns, Moss Motors, Baker Oil, GBC Phils and the Long Beach Nitehawks. After playing for the 1958 Championship team sponsored by an area restaurant, Gay and Larry’s Mexican Food, Bob participated on teams that won seven De Anza I Titles and SCMAF Southern California Championships. During his softball career, Bob tossed several perfect games in league play, mainly because of the speed and movement of his pitches. Opposing teams often walked him when he came up to bat because they feared his hitting ability and power. Bob came to be known as “Mr. Softball” in Riverside because of his skill on the softball diamond. Many longtime Riverside residents vividly remember going to Evans Park just to specifically watch him play softball. Bob unfortunately died in July 1968 in an industrial accident and soon thereafter, the City of Riverside recognized “Mr. Softball” by naming two city softball fields in his honor.
